I weave willow baskets.
This ancient art form combines many of the things I love best: working with my hands, producing a practical item for daily use from plants in our local ecosystems, and getting creative with beauty and design.
Why Willow?
During the research for my book, I learned that many of the keystone native nut trees I was learning about—in particular oak, chestnut, and hazel—were also basketry species in many cultures. I wanted to learn to weave with these trees, but the only class I could find was in willow. As soon as I began, I knew I wanted to continue.
Like oaks, willows are what’s called a keystone species—as important to their ecosystems as the keystone in a Roman arch. Recently, I have also been exploring weaving with other locally abundant species, including brambles, bittersweet, grapes, and white oak.
My teachers since I began learning to weave in 2023 have included Mary Lauren Fraser (willow), Hanna Van Aelst (willow), and Amy Krone (white oak & willow). This year, I began teaching classes of my own and selling baskets locally.
